A non-healing or chronic wound is defined as a wound that does not improve after four weeks or does not heal in eight weeks. These includes:
*If you have diabetes with any tender areas on your foot, this condition warrants immediate attention, regardless of how long the wound has been present. Extremity Wound Centers physicians have expertise in treating diabetes-related foot wounds.
Should I be concerned about a wound that is not healing?
Non-healing wounds are a serious condition. We are exposed to common bacteria like staphylococcus and pseudomonas daily and these bacteria are normally present on our skin and in the environment around us. Normally benign when you are healthy and wound free, an open wound increases the risk for infection. This can lead to more serious conditions, and in extreme cases, even the loss of a limb.
